Design and construction of the largest
single-span bridge in Ireland. The
contract was undertaken by RDL-
GRAHAM Joint Venture.

The bridge is an elevated 866m four-lane
dual carriageway across the river Foyle
downstream of the city of Londonderry.
The seven approach spans on the east
bank vary between 40 and 55m and are
of prestressed concrete box construction.
The three main river spans are of steel
box construction varying in depth from 3m
to 9m. These steel girders were fabricated
in Harland and Wolffs' Belfast Shipyard in 6 segments, weighed up to 900 tonnes each
and were transported by barge and ocean going tug to site where they were lifted into position. The main river span of 234m is the longest in Ireland.
