The Illinois Tollway Interchange between the North-South and East-West Tollway demonstrates that segmental concrete structures can be applied to complicated curved geometry alignments. It also proves that segmental structures are extremely competitive with steel girders, especially on curved alignments. The four structures, individually not large enough to justify a segmental design, were aggregated into one contract of 186,000 square', which was successfully bid against a curved steel I-girder design, saving the Authority $4.5 million or about 30% of the cost of the steel bid. |
