Built by the British, the Bosphorus Bridge (Bogaz Koprusu) was opened in 1973, just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Republic. Standing 64 metres high and stretching for 1 kilometre in length, the bridge is the fourth largest suspension bridge in the world and the longest in Europe. It is also unique in being the only bridge to span two continents. Right from the world go, the bridge proved so overwhelmingly popular that the entire cost of construction was recouped from tolls collected within the first 28 months of opened.
